On getting pwnt
Up until now I’ve been taking class in Japan with one guy, who is freakin’ amazing but he follows Americans and Shikkin just like everyone here, so his style has been relatively easy to follow though still technically challenging at times. At least I’ve done well enough that he wants me to perform with him at some point.
So I was reallyyyyy taken by surprise when I got totally OWNED by this girl teacher that I took a class from tonight. I felt heavy, fat, and unprepared entirely O_O. Why? Because she was doing really energetic, old school hip hop from way back when that I’ve honestly never had the opportunity to learn. And trust me it’s harder than it looks – you’d think all that rhythmic kicking and jumping should be easy to catch on… It’s got it’s own technicality to it, but if you can’t keep up with the aerobic component of it, you can forget getting the dance all together! But being in Japan gives me this opportunity to learn a foundation of hiphop I have never gotten the chance to. It really put me out of my comfort zone, and I am truly humbled. Osaka and Kobe are the closest big cities – Kobe is known for old-school stuff and some honestly mega-asian stuff. Osaka, as far as I’ve heard, has more Westernized style? But I don’t really know. I’m going tomorrow to take a few classes to find out for myself.
Anyway guys, don’t forget the importance of practicing your foundation and trying new things! I’m gonna do my best to master this style too.
Love,
Val

RFH at Chicago Smart Battle
The Chicago Smart Battle took place yesterday at Smart Bar near Addison. Two of your very own Bboys went and represented ReFresH (under the name Dope Sauce Crew) among some of the biggest names in the Chicago area. Myself aka KCheung aka Bboy Jukebox and Jason Hwang aka Bboy Ntropy were pitted up in a 2v2 against Waka and Shorty of Brickheadz and Ak and Torsion of Chicago Tribe in a 3 crew battle.
Oh yeah, for those of you who don’t know Jason Hwang, he’s gonna be a first year Grad student at NU this year. A bunch of us have been chilling with him since he got here. He’s got mad style and is looking forward to meeting everyone else in the crew. He’s a pretty cool guy so look forward to meeting him too.
So anyway, here is an excerpt from a review of the battle:
* Battle #4 Was Quite A Treat;literally…dope Sauce Crew, Chicago Tribe#1(torsion And Ak) And Brickheadz #1(waka And Shorty)…dope Sauce Crew Was Pretty Good, But They Were Overshadowed By The Star Power In This Battle. Ak Was Flaring Away And Torsion Was Twisting Away…but The Ageless Waka Was Hoping From Limb To Limb And Shorty Was Well..shorty. Brickheadz Win
We got pretty destroyed in the battle, so it made me happy to hear that we at least got some props from some of the spectators. It was pretty obvious that Brickheadz and Chi tribe were ignoring us and going after each other, but I mean that wasn’t unexpected. I must say though, it was a humbling experience to go in with your all and still be ignored. Gotta step it up a notch to raise our levels. Personally, I don’t want to have to go through that again. All in all, a sick battle, good times, good dancing, and then Taco Bell afterwards.
UPDATE: On the left is Jason hitting his jumping thread to a rollback airchair. The only pic I found of me dancing was landing after an invert (I look like I’m bending over) so I just put this one of me standing on the side trying to intimidate my opponent.
ReFresH has a Youtube Channel!!!
Hey guys,
A random thought occurred to me the other day, and that thought was, “Hey, why doesn’t ReFresH have a youtube account?” It would be nice to have a separate channel for us with videos of our performances, instead of having to search for our videos that are uploaded by a bunch of other people. Why not post them in one convenient place?
So last night I made ReFresH’s account “refreshdancecrew” and posted all of the videos from the past that I could find/get access to, and reposted them in this channel! If you want to check out the page click the link below:
ReFresH Dance Crew’s Youtube Page
If there are other videos that you think I’m missing, please let me know! Hopefully we can use this as a good way to advertise to the incoming freshman class by showing our own youtube page so they can check out all of our videos. I’ve already been in touch with several freshmen after Sam and I wrote a little something about ReFresH on a dance thread on a Facebook group for the new freshmen. Let’s get excited for the new year!
